What's your root cause?

Truth: all this talk about feelings and emotions this month and I’m like, oof!

I’m asking myself: can we get to something a little more peppy?

You betcha! (showing off my Minnesota roots here)

But we’re not done with feelings just yet!

Why not?!?!

Because with my holistic approach to health and healing, I believe that emotions are at the root of your health issues and we simply must acknowledge and address this, especially right now.

Raise your hand if you’ve ever been afraid to feel your feelings or afraid to communicate them.

Yep, me too!

Emotions are energy.

And when we suppress our feelings, that energy can get stuck in our bodies.

This has happened all our life, especially for those of us who have a hard time feeling, expressing, or communicating emotion.

We’ve all done it.

Something happens that you deem “bad” and you feel an emotional response in your body that you don’t want to feel. So you ignore it or suppress it.

Perhaps you buffer these unwanted feelings by over-working, online shopping, excessive drinking, over-eating, Netflix-binging?

The problem with ignoring your emotions is that emotions grow when you resist them.

Those unresolved emotions (even from childhood) can manifest as pain, illness, weight gain, unexplained health issues, and disease.

Science has caught on to what healers have known for centuries: the powerful and direct connection between emotional and spiritual factors with health outcomes.

Mind-body medicine is finding that emotions, beliefs, memories, habits, and thought patterns can play a central role in all aspects of your health.

It is the connection with what’s going on in your mind and your heart with what’s happening and manifesting in your body, that shapes the emotional root causes of pain, health, and imbalances within the body.

This mind-body connection is happening on a physical and chemical level as the brain and body are connected through neural pathways made up of neurotransmitters, hormones and chemicals all of which are communicating between the brain, neurological, endocrine, and immune systems.

Remember that 70-80% of your immune system is housed in your gut, your gastrointestinal tract.

So yes, it makes sense that emotions affect your immune system and a weakened immune system leaves you vulnerable to disease and other imbalances.

There are many root causes of illness and disease including environmental, emotional, physical, and lifestyle.

While I address all of the above, I find the emotional root cause, many times, is the piece of health and wellbeing that needs to be addressed first, before improvement is experienced.
