7 Types of Rest You Need and How to Practice Them

Are you experiencing burnout?

Feeling drained and depleted?

Wonder why you wake up exhausted even after a good night’s sleep?

We’re learning that sleep alone is not effective in managing exhaustion and fatigue.

Chances are, you may be in need of a different type of rest.

According to Dr. Saundra Dalton-Smith, internal medicine physician and author of Sacred Rest: Recover Your Life, Renew Your Energy, Restore Your Sanity, we need 7 different types of rest to feel refreshed, fully alive, and fully ourselves.

The 7 types of rest and how to practice them

1. Physical rest

Incorporate restorative ways to decrease muscle tension, reduce headaches, and promote higher quality sleep.

  • Do gentle movement like stretching or yoga

  • Go for a nature walk

  • Get a massage

2. Mental rest

Take a break from constant stimulation and focus on things that matter to you.

  • Engage in restorative practices like meditation or breathwork

  • Set aside time to unplug from electronic devices

  • Prioritize leisure activities that allow your mind to wander, such as reading or taking a walk

3. Social rest

Find a balance between socializing and solitude.

  • Cultivate relationships with people who uplift and support you

  • Limit time with negative people or end toxic friendships

  • Set boundaries and communicate your needs in social situations

4. Sensory rest

The opportunity to downgrade the endless onslaught of sensory input.

  • Turn off the TV

  • Turn off notifications and go screen-free at least one before bed or when you wake up

  • Practice deep breathing or mindfulness meditation

5. Spiritual rest

Connecting on a deeper level with something greater than ourselves.

  • Get clear on your core values

  • Practice gratitude by keeping a journal or sharing your thankfulness with others

  • Engage in prayer, meditation, or reflection

6. Emotional rest

The freedom to authentically express feelings and eliminate people-pleasing behaviors.

  • Make time to journal and express your feelings

  • Take “yes” breaks and learn to say “no”

  • Talk to a trusted friend or go to therapy

  • Honor your boundaries

7. Creative rest

The process of recharging your creative energy and finding inspiration.

  • Read a book just for fun

  • Spend time in nature

  • Engage in activities that stimulate your creativity like visiting an art exhibit or attending a creative workshop

Each type of rest serves a unique purpose and helps you to recharge and restore your energy levels.

By understanding these different types, you can identify areas of your life where you need to focus on rest and then prioritize your self-care accordingly.
