Earthing: Ground Your Body and Lower Inflammation

Happy Autumn! Sunday was the equinox and official start of fall. Did you mark the day in some way?

That morning I hosted a virtual Autumn Equinox workshop that was fun and meaningful.

Later that day, I went to a park in Brooklyn that has a spectacular view of the sunset. I put my bare feet in the grass, did some journaling, and watched as the sun set on the urban horizon.

This transitional season is perfect for connecting with the earth, grounding your body, and setting intentions for what you’d like to call into your life.

My body often calls to me to get outside and connect with the earth. Living in an apartment building in Brooklyn with no immediate access to nature, I don’t always heed the call, but I do my best to connect with the earth as often as possible

What about you? Do you actively connect with the earth?

And, have you ever heard of “earthing”?

Earthing, also referred to as grounding, is when your body comes into direct contact with the earth, connecting you to the earth’s natural electric charge. This charge allows your body to absorb the earth’s electrons, which work as natural antioxidants that neutralize the positively charged free radicals that can damage your body.

Earthing practices include:

  • Walking, sitting, or laying barefoot in the grass, sand or dirt

  • Swimming or relaxing in a natural body of water

  • Gardening and touching soil

The research suggests that consistent earthing practices has benefits such as:

  • Reduce inflammation

  • Reduce stress & anxiety

  • Improve mood

  • Improve sleep

  • Improve cardiovascular function

  • Reduce symptoms of pain

  • Balance cortisol

  • Improve immune system function

  • Heal wounds

  • Improve blood flow

  • Calm the nervous system

Remember that earthing, like all healing modalities, is not a quick fix. It requires patience, time, and sticking to a routine.

It can be as simple as going barefoot in the grass for 20 minutes a day. Thankfully, there are indoor grounding mats as another option.

My friend if you are looking for guidance with a holistic approach to lowering inflammation and reducing pain, let’s talk.
