Depression, Trigeminal Neuralgia, and Creating Joy and Softness With Danielle Colby

I used to be embarrassed by my chronic illness.

I was diagnosed with the autoimmune disease rheumatoid arthritis in 2000, and medication kept me in remission for a decade. However, things changed after the meds stopped working in 2010 and my inflammation skyrocketed.

For example, my hands used to be locked shut every morning for a few hours and I would have to hold them under hot water to help ease the pain. I had difficulty walking up stairs and getting off the couch.

While I was young and looked healthy, I thought people would think I was exaggerating. My insecurities and confusion about what was happening with my body led me to try to hide it. I didn’t want anyone to know I was in pain and I certainly didn’t feel comfortable asking for help.

When I reflect back on those trying days, I am grateful for how far I’ve come, and how my journey with RA changed my life for the better. I learned to practice self-compassion, ask for help, and I improved my diet and lifestyle, which ultimately led me to a deeper connection with my body, myself, and the opportunity to help and coach people who are struggling with their health.

Because I understand the desire to ignore pain and try to pretend everything is okay, I admire those who have the courage to be vulnerable and share their health struggles.

One of those people is my friend Danielle Colby, who you may know from her role on History's hit reality television series, American Pickers. Danielle and I know each other through the burlesque community and over the years developed a bond of mutual respect and friendship.

Tune in as Danielle shares her struggles with trigeminal neuralgia, a chronic neurological pain condition that involves sudden attacks of severe facial pain, while also dealing with depression and a bipolar diagnosis. Emphasizing the importance of a support system and community, Danielle discusses the significant lifestyle changes she’s made in order to support her own health and healing.
