Do you really want to "get back to normal"?

It’s been one year since a global pandemic was declared and as I reflect on where I was one year ago, it seems like yesterday, but also long ago.

There was so much fear, confusion, unknown, and overwhelm.

I think most of us have done a lot of reflecting on where we’ve come, what we’ve accomplished or not, how we’re feeling and how we’re assessing this past year.

A year later, here in NYC, spring is in the air. It’s a chilly sunny day, and a bird is chirping as I write this. It feels hopeful.

I am deeply ready for change, new beginnings. And a new haircut.

Yes, I’m getting a haircut this week! The first time I’ve had a haircut in a year and a half.

Getting a new haircut feels like a marker for me in this pandemic. I am aching for a fresh start. I am also eager to start anew with a new hairdo.

What are you looking forward to?

You know, so many people keep saying they can’t wait for things to “get back to normal.”

Honestly, I don’t want things to “get back to normal.” That expression rubs me the wrong way.

What is normal anyway?

Despite the loss and devastation of 2020 and all that the global pandemic brought us, “normal” hadn’t been working for a lot of people for a long time.

The overworking, overdoing, over stressing, rushing, pushing, hustling, ignoring our body’s messages is not healthy. It wasn’t healthy then and it’s not healthy now.

This past year, many of my clients and students have learned to slow down for the first time in their lives. They’re reflecting on their lifestyle choices and I’m helping them make shifts and changes to support their wellbeing. Consequently, they’re telling me their emotional wellbeing and physical health are significantly improving.

Returning "back to normal" might not even be possible. We’ve changed. We’ve changed as individuals and we’ve changed as a collective.

Truthfully, I don’t want to “get back to normal.” (Yes of course I want to easily and safely see all my friends and family, go see shows, and do all the things, but you know what I mean.)

I want continued growth and improvement.

I want new beginnings.

I want rejuvenation.

And I want a new hairdo!

As you're reading this, think about where you were and what you were doing and feeling one year ago today.

How have you changed?

What have you learned about yourself?

What used to be your normal? Has it changed? Was it supportive to the life you actually want to live?
