Since turning 50 this year, I've been reflecting on how much I've grown since I was 40, and even 30.
I was diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis when I was 27. I didn’t understand the gravity of the diagnosis so it didn’t scare me. It didn't shake me that I was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease, a chronic illness. Or maybe it did and I’ve simply forgotten?
When we hit milestone birthdays, or when we receive a diagnosis or experience significant, transformative, or even traumatic events, we tend to take stock.
So when I think back about where I was when I was diagnosed with RA, or when I turned 30, what would I tell myself, knowing what I know now? Would I even be ready or open to listen? These are a few things I would say:
Learn to breathe
It’s okay to be vulnerable, it’s not a sign of weakness
Eat more vegetables
It’s okay to start eating meat again
Yoga actually helps
You don’t need to work 12 hour days to prove your worth
It’s healing to receive
It’s healing to think positive thoughts
What would you say to your past self at a significant point in your life - a time when you could have really used your love and care?
Now, let’s think about our future self.
Consider your ideal life 10 years from now.
How does that feel? Where do you want to be? What will your health and wellbeing look like? What steps are you taking right now to get you there?
I think it’s fun, and sometimes intimidating, to think about all the possibilities for our future....But, what if we don’t follow-through? What if we can’t make it happen?
But! What if it does all happens -- and more than you imagined? What if you believed that you are blessed beyond your wildest dreams?
Let’s hold on to that this week – a sense of growth, wonder, and curiosity and the feeling of being blessed.
Cheers to our past and future selves.
