Do you ever wonder why sometimes you can't – or rather why you don’t – uphold commitments to yourself? Even when you really want to do the thing you’re committing to?
It’s not because you are lazy or incapable or “not good enough,” it’s just that we are not conditioned to prioritize ourselves.
Prioritizing yourself, and your health, takes effort and practice and that comes when you create realistic expectations for yourself.
Think about it.
When you keep commitments to yourself, what does that do for your sense of self? Your growth? Your self-confidence and self-trust?
And I’m not speaking about any commitments, but rather “aligned” commitments that feel authentic to you, your needs and your desires.
Some questions to get you thinking:
What does it mean to be committed to yourself?
Are you committed to yourself? Why or why not?
What health-related commitment will you make for yourself this week?
What is one thing you can do to begin?
What will help you stay committed?
Remember: keeping commitments to yourself ebbs and flows and takes practice.
So if you have a history of self-criticism or self-doubt, please practice self-compassion: place your hand on your heart, take a deep breath, and ask yourself, "What do I need?" --- Open your heart, and listen.
